Senior Management Professionals Program – Session Descriptions

Getting Current With Technology

Saturday, March 24

With the venue of Georgia Tech for the opening session of SMPP for 2007, what better topic than technology to kick off the program. Rich Steele, Director of the Georgia Tech Student Center will coordinate a group of subject matter experts on the future of technology. Topics ranging from the internet of the future to new wireless protocols to social networking to handheld computing will be covered.

The desired learning outcomes for participants are:

to understand how technology is going to impact our facilities and programs in the future
to understand how decision-making should be impacted by technology factors
to reflect on how programs and services offered in student unions can be improved through effective use of technology
to gain insight on how a technology leader is planning to address these issues

SMPP – Meeting the Leadership Challenge

Monday, March 26

SMPP participants will be given the opportunity to complete the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) prior to the conference. Completed LPI's (self & observers) will be mailed in advance and analyzed with designated software. Results will be distributed to individuals at the conference. This session will review the five extraordinary leadership behaviors described in The Leadership Challenge (Kouzes & Posner, 2002) that are reflective in the LPI instrument. Participants that complete the instrument in advance will be able to evaluate their own leadership style. A collective analysis of SMPP participants will also be conducted and discussed.

The desired learning outcomes for participants are:

to understand Kouzes & Posner's five leadership practices;
to review results from completed LPI instruments (individual participants);
to recognize differences of perception between self & observers;
to observe collective leadership practices of SMPP participants;
to gain insight of effective college union leadership based on participant comments made during the session and in relation to the discussion.

Leadership Lessons from a Presidential Perspective

Tuesday, March 27

Dr. Frances Lucas, President of Millsaps College, will present a keynote session to the conference entitled, Presidential Perspectives on Higher Education & the College Union. In the keynote she will discuss the current state of higher education, some of the challenges that lie ahead, and how she believes the college union can be best positioned for the future. During the time period directly following the keynote, Dr. Lucas will discuss leadership with SMPP participants. She will make initial comments, followed by questions and interactive discussion. It is anticipated that this session will be a frank discussion about what is expected of leaders in higher education, what success means at the institutional level, and what role college unions and their leaders have in contributing toward that success.

The desired learning outcomes for participants are:

to understand how a college president defines success, and the role of senior college union leaders;
to understand what a college president expects from her leadership team, and how she depends on them;
to reflect on what college unions can do to meet the challenges that lie ahead in higher education;
to gain insight into what it means to lead at the institutional level.

Bringing Sustainability to the Unions

Wednesday, March 28

As college union leaders, do we think about how our operations impact the environment, social development, and the economic growth of the world? Do we model behavior to students that teaches the value of being environmentally and socially responsible, and active citizens in the global economy? Such questions are at the heart of the sustainability movement. This session will provide senior leaders with an understanding of the concepts of sustainability, and give cause to reflect on how college unions can actively incorporate sustainability practices. Participants will travel to Emory University for a brief tour of the Goizueta Business School, one of the first facilities in the nation to be awarded LEED Gold certification for an existing building. Once on campus, an educational session will be facilitated jointly by Emory and Interface Flooring, a company driven to operate in a completely sustainable manner.

The desired learning outcomes for participants are:

to understand the basic concepts of sustainability;
to observe a sustainable environment by touring the Goizueta Business School;
to reflect on how college unions can actively incorporate sustainability practices;
to gain insight of best practices in sustainability from both corporate and higher education perspectives.

Participant Orientation: Monday, March 26, 8:30–9:45 a.m.
Case Study Presentation: Tuesday, March 27, 8:30–11:30 a.m.

Ever been faced with an ethical or legal dilemma? Have you wondered how student affairs practitioners might handle specific situations? Each day, college unions and student activities volunteers and staff must make important decisions that have a direct impact on building campus community and the lives of individual students.

Now is your opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge, experience, and analytical skills to help others become better community builders. Join a team of three students to test your knowledge of typical and not-so-typical college union and student activities issues. Each team will prepare a response to a scenario based on real-life situations.

Two separate competitions will be coordinated—one for undergraduate students and one for graduate students. You may form your own team or you may indicate your interest at check-in when you arrive at the conference and be placed on a team of other interested students. No preparation prior to the conference is necessary.

On Monday morning, all teams will be required to meet for an orientation for the case study competition. Teams will work independently to prepare for the presentations Tuesday morning, when a panel of ACUI members will review team responses. The judges will provide their expert analysis of each case presentation and select the best prepared response. The winning teams will be announced at the Community Builders Awards Ceremony that afternoon, where each member of the winning teams from the undergraduate-level and graduate-level competitions will receive an ACUI Bookstore gift certificate.
